Throwback Thursday- Ornamental Pine

I liked this pine sprig when it came out. I thought I would use it a lot, but only managed to create a couple of cards with it.

I decided to try a different technique with the ornaments. I used foil paper and I embossed it with silver and gold embossing powders. I do like the results. I stamped the pine branch over and over to get the look of a full Christmas tree.

 I used both Ornamental Pine and Christmas Messages stamp sets to create this card.

Tuesday Tutorial #113 Better Together Christmas

Last month I forgot to do a Tuesday Tutorial Christmas card, so this month I had to make sure to do one.

This set is in the Annual Catalog, not even in the Christmas section. It has stamps for other occasions so that makes it a little more versatile.

The quilt paper makes it cozy and fun.

Throwback Thursday- The Newborn King

I thought I would do something different with this card, so I made a tri-fold. The main image has a natural dividing line that made it easy to do. I used my Stamp-A-Ma-Jig to stamp the two parts, but it would have been easier to just cut the stamp at that point.

The folded card is 4 1/4" x 4 1/2". The flaps are both two and a half inches wide. It isn't real easy to tell from the photo that I heat embossed everything with silver embossing powder. It looks great on the Midnight Muse cardstock.

Throwback Thursday # 30 Be Very Merry

I just discovered that this cute little card didn't get posted to my blog, so I thought I would share it for a Throwback Thursday.
I think it is a card that I created from a Mojo Monday sketch, which means it should have posted to my blog about 2 years ago! Better late than never, I guess.

I used some beautiful Christmas Designer Series paper for the center stripe. The snowflake is die cut from silver glimmer paper.

Throwback Thursday # 27 Paint Prints Poinsettia

I don't think this stamp set was intended to be a Christmas stamp set but it is fun to see what happens when we try different things.

This stamp set is one that Stampin' Up! offered in 2005. It was a hostess set and is called Paint Prints.

I decided to use the rectangle, that is in the set, to create a background mosaic. I could have used it horizontally to create a brick pattern instead, but I like the mosaic effect for this holiday card.

Throwback Thursday # 26 Penguin Paradise Christmas card

This is the first time I have used this cute little set. I think I purchased it at a thrift store several years ago. I decided to use it in an unconventional way...as a Christmas card. There are more penguins in the set and one may just end up as a Valentines Day card ☺.

Most of the products are current this time... the throwback element is the penguin stamp.

Wednesday 201- Beyond the Basics

Today's Beyond the Basics is about using vellum to enhance your paper projects.

This post is barely scratching the surface of vellum. If you are on Pinterest you can put vellum in the search box and find many more ideas for incorporating it into your projects.

On this sample card I used a printed vellum from Stampin' Up!s Fall catalog. To attach vellum to your projects you have to get creative because glue and snail tape will show through, and it doesn't enhance the projects. I stitched the vellum to the card stock for this sample. The printed vellum is a quick way to add interest to your backgrounds and it tones down whatever you put it on so you can use a brighter card stock and the card won't be overwhelming.

For this next sample I used the vellum as an overlay to tone down a busy print. I stamped the sentiment directly on the front of the vellum with Stazon ink. With vellum you can't use just any ink pad you have sitting around. Most Pigment type inks will not dry on vellum. If you want to use a pigment pad you can sprinkle on embossing powder and emboss it. Brilliance inks are the exception. For Brilliance inks all you need to do is dry it with your heat tool. You can use most dye inks but even some of them aren't suitable. Some dye inks tend to 'run' on the surface and make a 'halo' around the stamped image. Not what you want to see. That is why I generally use Stazon ink, if I am not planning on heat embossing.
My advice about inks is to try a sample stamp with your ink and vellum and see how it reacts.
To attach the vellum to the card I used brads in the corners.

I stamped this with VersaMark ink and then sprinkled on the embossing powder and heat embossed it. Heat embossing on vellum can be tricky. Vellum warps and scorches easily. Sometimes heating the vellum from the backside and then heating on the front side works well. I advise practicing first before creating your project. Then you will be able to see how your ink, embossing powder, vellum and heat tool interact, and you'll be able to figure out the technique that works best for you. I strongly recommend using an Embossing Buddy on the vellum before stamping on it.
After that I flipped it over and used markers to color in the flower. This makes a quick elegant card. If you experiment with this method you can get a faux watercolor effect that is quite nice.

To attach the vellum on this card I cut the vellum longer than I needed it and then wrapped it around the top and bottom of a white card and attached it to the back of the white card. Then I attached the white card to the colored card base. 

Finally, I used an embossing folder with this piece of vellum. You can get some very beautiful effects by putting vellum in embossing folders and running them through your Big Shot. It adds texture and interest, and again the vellum tones down the strong color of the background (Cherry Cobbler).

I hope you have enjoyed this tiny look at how vellum can enhance your projects. I may have to do a part 2 to show you more, because there are so many more things you can do!

Tuesday Tutorial # 23- Spotlight on the Nativity

Welcome back to another Tuesday Tutorial. This tutorial highlights the Spotlight Technique. I used the All Ye Faithful stamp set from Stampin' Up! The Spotlight in this card is on Mary and baby Jesus. I think I will also make another version of this Spotlight card with the Spotlight on the family, use a circle punch and include Joseph. I think it would have a greater impact.

Throwback Thursday # 14

Welcome back to Throwback Thursday. This week I pulled out another snowman stamp set called 'Frosty'. I've just been pulling stamp sets from the front and rotating them to the back when I'm done with them so it is rather random that I am sharing 2 snowmen cards on 2 consecutive Thursdays.

The sparkles on this card don't show up very well in this photo. Perhaps if you click on the photo you can see the glitter that I added to the snowflakes, snowman and greeting. This card is 4" x 6" instead of the standard 4 1/4" x 5 1/2".

Tuesday Tutorial # 9 Z-Fold Christmas Card

It's already August and I didn't get any Christmas in July cards posted! So just had to do one. This one is a z-fold card. I used the new stamp set, Every Blessing. It is in the annual catalog. In a few weeks the Holiday Catalog will be here and we will have even more stamp sets to choose from. For those of you who like to begin creating Christmas cards in the summer, there have been 7 sets available in the annual Stampin' Up! catalog that started in June.

Sparkly Crhistmas Tree Card

Here's a Christmas card that I thought I had already shared on my blog, but don't see it. 

This is almost exactly like the one that Carol Lovenstein created for her husband. 

Here are the changes I made to her great design;
1. I didn't sponge green ink onto silver glimmer paper. Instead I used Wild Wasabi Designer Series Paper circles and I like the contrast with the red and silver glimmer papers.
2. I used Shimmery White card stock behind the tree. You can see the sparkle in this photo, but in person it is more subtle and I don't know that I would use the Shimmery White on this card if I were mass producing it.
3. I used a coordinating Wild Wasabi Designer Series Paper for the tree stand instead of Early Espresso, or whatever darker card stock was used in the original.

Other than that it is a copy of a winning card.
